The various program events and volunteer opportunities are listed below. Find something that matches your interests and contact the program committee chair, Peter Pollock (padasaw@comcast.net is best, call 303-247-0245 if you like, or come to our meeting). Kick-off celebration January 10, 2009! Work with Kay Oltmans, director of the CU Heritage Center, the CU Alumni Center, and Boulder Revels to help kick-off the Boulder 150 celebration. About 150 guests from historic preservation organizations, sesquicentennial volunteers, and sponsors will gather on January 10, 5 to 7 p.m. at the CU Koenig Alumni Center to celebrate the debut of the Boulder 150 program.

Official City Council observance of the Sesquicentennial February 10, 2009, 5:30 to 9 p.m. Help coordinate this televised celebration of Boulder’s 150th birthday: a multi-media presentation about Boulder’s history; the recollections of Boulder’s council members, mayors and city managers; and a public reception with a birthday cake.
Boulder Blossoms Restoring Boulder’s beloved open space, spring or fall 2009. One of Boulder’s defining characteristic is the beautiful greenbelt and open space surrounding our city. As we celebrate the sesquicentennial, let’s give back to the land in a volunteer effort to restore a piece of open space. This would involve recruiting volunteers and helping Boulder’s Department of Open Space and Mountain Parks with logistics.
The Sesquicentennial Stroll July 4, 2009. The focus of the community celebration of the sesquicentennial will be on the 4th of July, 2009. A community walk will link together some of Boulder’s most special historic properties leading participants to the fireworks at Folsom Field. The Sesquicentennial “Stroll” will take participants from Chautauqua to the Columbia Cemetery to the Boulder History Museum to the Bandshell to the CU Heritage Center to the fireworks and community celebration at Folsom Field, enjoying a community event and appreciating our local history. Volunteers will be needed to coordinate the overall event (publicity, security, marshals, walker support) as well as some help at the specific venues, especially the concert at the Bandshell.
A Coming Home Gathering of the Arapaho Tribe early to mid-August 2009. Tentative plans include a sesquicentennial wave in the Pearl Street Mile; a noon time concert on the Mall of an Arapaho band; a two hour evening presentation on the Pearl Street Mall including a color guard, dancing, drums, and storytelling; and a picnic/barbeque for participants. Help with coordination of the event and hospitality for the Tribal members.
Sesquicentennial lecture series spring and fall 2009. The Center of the American West and the Boulder 150 committee have teamed up to present two panel discussions; one looks back at Boulder over the past 50 years and reflects on this dynamic period, the other looks forward to speculate on what changes might be ahead for Boulder. Help with publicity, logistics and the event itself.
Sesquicentennial essay contest December 2009. An essay contest for BVSD elementary, middle school, and high school students on the topic of a significant policy, program, or law that shaped Boulder. Help set up guidelines for the contest itself, secure prizes, set up judging and coordinate the award ceremony at the Closing Event (see below).
Closing event December 2009. This will be the closing event of the year long celebration of the Sesquicentennial. It is a major opportunity to mark the sesquicentennial one last time and thank participants. We need your help in planning an event for all the citizens of Boulder to enjoy, ending at the Millennium Harvest House.
